“Population Issues: A solution to the classical optimal population dilemma and some simple population/immigration fallacies”
Professor Ng will discuss his views on population ethics, related to his important 1989 paper “What should we do about future generations? The impossibility of Parfit’s Theory X”. This paper is well known for containing one of the earliest statements of an “impossibility theorem” for population ethics, together with and explanation of the sense in which, in Professor Ng’s view, a variable-value approach is an adequate response to such impossibilities.
Please contact Michelle if you would like to join Professor Ng for lunch after this seminar.
