The 2018 Joint Session

The Joint Session

92nd Joint Session of the Aristotelian Society and the Mind Association

The joint session is a three-day conference in philosophy that is held annually during the summer by the Aristotelian Society and the Mind Association. It has taken place at nearly every major university across the United Kingdom and in Ireland. Since 1910, the Joint Session has grown to become the largest gathering of philosophers in the country, attracting prestigious UK and international speakers working in a broad range of philosophical areas. Inaugurated by the incoming President of the Mind Association, the Joint Session includes symposia, open and postgraduate sessions, and a range of satellite conferences.

The Open Sessions take place during the Saturday and Sunday afternoons of the conference. There are a large number of places available, allowing room for an extensive and diverse programme of talks. There are no restrictions on the areas of philosophy which papers may address. The intention is to accommodate all philosophical material (so far as time and space in the programme allow) that is suitable for presentation. Each Open Session talk lasts up to 20 minutes and is followed by an additional 10 minutes for discussion.

Submissions should be no more than 2000 words, including footnotes and bibliography, and should begin with an abstract of no more than 100 words.

Submissions should be typewritten in a standard 12 pt font and single-spaced throughout (including references and quotations). All pages should be numbered and have margins of one inch or more.

Submissions should be formatted in PDF. Submissions should be submitted online at joint.session@philosophy.ox.ac.uk by 1 February 2018

Authors whose papers have been accepted for the Open Session will be informed by the end of March 2018.

Only one paper per individual may be submitted.

Submissions must be for either the Open or the Postgraduate Sessions - not both. Rejected submissions for the Postgraduate Session could be recommended for the Open Session.

All conference delegates must be members of either the Aristotelian Society or the Mind Association.

For information about the Postgraduate Session, please see the 2018 postgraduate session.
