Each year the Faculty has around 170 full-time graduate students who are studying across our four degree programmes: the DPhil in Philosophy, the BPhil in Philosophy, the MSt in Ancient Philosophy and the MSt in Philosophy of Physics. As a graduate student, you will have opportunities to get involved in a variety of philosophy-related events and programmes, and will become a valued member of our graduate community. A list of our current graduate students can be found here.
Information for prospective students on inclusivity in the Faculty of Philosophy
The Faculty has a dedicated Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, led by the Faculty EDI Officer. There is also an EDI student representative. Further information on the Faculty’s commitment to EDI can be found here.
The Faculty Gender Minorities Officer and the Gender Minorities Student Representative organise regular events for students and faculty who identify as female or another minority gender. For example, there are termly social events and coffee chat groups. We also offer a separate session as part of our Open Day for graduate offer holders, where offer holders who identify as female or another minority gender can speak to current gender minority graduate students and faculty, and learn more about the gender minorities community within the Faculty.
We are committed to providing a supportive environment for all graduate students, and our dedicated Disability and Welfare Coordinator can be contacted with any concerns that students may have regarding a wellbeing matter or any adjustments that you may require. The Disability and Welfare Coordinator works closely with the University’s Disability Advisory Service (DAS) and is part of a wide network of colleagues who have student welfare at the forefront of their role, and can assist students in locating appropriate help and support with any welfare or wellbeing matters that arise. The Faculty also has a dedicated welfare student representative who can be contacted with any concerns, and who organises regular welfare events for graduate students.
Getting involved as a graduate student
There are lots of opportunities to get involved in Faculty events as a graduate student, in addition to your formal teaching and research! Calls for nominations for student representatives are put out towards the end of each academic year; you can find information on the roles available here. There are several seminar series and research groups you may get involved with, in particular the DPhil Seminar, the Jowett Society, the Ockham Society, the Oxford Network for Ancient Philosophy (ONAP) and Philiminality. There is also an annual Graduate Philosophy Conference which is organised by a committee of the Faculty’s graduate students.
Contact the student representatives
Our student representatives are happy to be contacted with any queries or concerns you may have about our graduate community, whether you are a current student, a prospective student or a current offer-holder. You can find their details here.
