The Faculty operates a Graduate Placement Scheme which aims to support graduate research students on the job market from the final year of their DPhil until they secure a tenure track / permanent position in philosophy.
The Placement Scheme is presided over by a member of the Faculty who is appointed as the Placement Officer and administered by the Graduate Studies Officer. The Placement Committee provides advice and assistance to Placement Scheme users on the preparation of their CV and other application materials, as well as running Practice Job Talk Seminars and Mock Job Interviews.
The Placement Scheme will also assist students by holding their references on file and distributing them, at the student’s request, to universities and other academic institutions in support of applications that the student has made. The Placement Committee will also review all letters of reference. References can be ranked on request.
Finally, the Placement Officer normally attends the annual APA Eastern Division meeting to support candidates who wish to enter the US job market. Some limited financial support is made available to students who wish to attend the meeting, and students can also apply to the DGS for modest funds for travel to conferences and workshops.
The Faculty has an outstanding placement record. In recent years, Oxford graduates have been appointed to posts at the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Copenhagen and Harvard. A number have also obtained positions within Oxford itself, including associate professorships and junior research fellowships. Please visit the DPhil Placement Record page for an overview of the Faculty’s placements in recent years.
