I work mainly on the philosophy of language and early modern philosophy (especially David Hume), with additional interests in philosophy of emotion, aesthetics, metaethics, religion, and descriptive metaphysics. I am also interested in computing and its applications in philosophy and the humanities more generally. In this vein, I created and maintain English Philosophical Texts Online, a free online library of early modern English-language philosophical texts, together with (embryonic) tools for digitally interrogating this corpus. I am also developing a computational model of the English language (https://merivale.uk/victor), inspired by the groundbreaking and sadly neglected work of logician and grammarian V. H. Dudman.
